What to Pack for Kids' Swimming Lessons in Hoppers Crossing: A Parent's Checklist

A well-packed swim bag makes lesson day easier for everyone. Whether your child is starting baby swimming lessons or is already a confident swimmer, here's what Hoppers Crossing and Wyndham families need to pack for swimming lessons for kids, including the Aqua Pants rule for babies and toddlers.

The swim bag checklist

Swimwear (wear it under clothes to save time)
Approved Aqua Pants for children under 3, or any child not yet toilet trained for at least 6 months
A swim cap
Goggles that fit well
A towel, or a hooded towel for little ones
Warm, easy-on clothes and thongs for the pool deck
A drink, a small snack and a bag for wet things

Aqua Pants for babies and toddlers

It is compulsory for all babies and pre-school age children under 3 years of age to wear our approved, non-disposable Aqua Pants, with tight-fitting swimwear that is tight around the legs to avoid any accidents that may occur.

Swim nappies are required, as per our sign below. No other swimming nappy will be accepted.

Good to know: Aqua Pants can be purchased at reception. If your child (regardless of age) has not been toilet trained for at least 6 months, they must also wear our approved Aqua Pants.

Swimwear and caps

Choose swimwear that fits snugly and lets your child move freely. Simple, chlorine-resistant styles last longest and dry quickly.

Swimming caps are compulsory for our pre-school, after school and squad programs. They keep hair drier and warmer in winter, keep long hair out of the face, and help keep our pools cleaner. Babies and adults don't need to wear them.

Goggles: fit beats features

Goggles help many children feel confident putting their face in the water. To check the fit, press them gently onto your child's eyes without the strap. If they stay put for a moment, the seal is good. Then adjust the strap so it's snug but not tight, and rinse them in cool water after use.

Packing for babies and toddlers

Our baby classes start from 4 months, with a parent in the water. Along with their Aqua Pants and swimwear, pack a hooded towel, a warm change of clothes and a bottle or snack, as little ones are often hungry after a swim.

Cup Day Closures, End-of-Year Make-Ups and 2027 Bookings

Here's a quick roundup of what's coming up at Shawn's Swim School as we head towards the end of the year.

Melbourne Cup closures

We will be closed on Monday 2nd of November and Tuesday 3rd of November for the Melbourne Cup.

Make-up lessons need to be done by the end of the year

Our last lesson for the year will be held on Saturday 19th of December . We will then be closed for 6 weeks and will re-open on Monday February 1st .
Any make-up lessons that you have incurred or do incur before December this year will not be transferred to 2027 .
If you don't get these make-ups done before we close, you will need to pay half for those missed lessons. (If you have pre-paid, we will refund half your payment for those lessons or take that amount off your Term 1 2027 fees.)
Late cancelled lessons and No Shows must also be paid for in full for your position to be held for 2027.

About "Late Cancels": these are lessons cancelled after our cut-off time. No exceptions can be made for cancellations made after these times, and the full lesson price is payable without the offer of a make-up lesson. The make-up system only works if we get reasonable notice; otherwise we won't be able to keep offering it. Thanks for your continued co-operation in helping us keep the make-up system going.

Bookings for 2027

We will be taking re-enrolment and time-change requests for 2027 from Monday November 9th .

Keeping your current time? There's nothing to do. Your current position will be reserved for you.
Returning, but can't come at your current time? Please see us at reception and we'll write down your desired times. The wider the range of times you give us, the more likely you are to get a position. Once your name is on that sheet, you are giving up your current time for 2027. We will hopefully be able to tell you by December what position you have for next year. If you don't get a permanent position, you'll still be able to have a lesson every week in a temporary spot (like a make-up lesson) until we get you a permanent position.
Would prefer a change, but can still come at your current time? Ask us to put you on our time change request form. You'll keep coming at your current time until we can accommodate your request.

In the past we've been able to get everyone a position by the first couple of weeks back in the new year, so don't panic, you should all get a position. It's us who have to panic, because we have to somehow organise all of this!

Not returning in 2027? Please let us know before December 1st .

Get Active Kids Vouchers: Round 11 Is Open

The Get Active Kids Voucher Program is now open!

We are pleased to let you know that we are a Get Active Kids Voucher Program Activity Provider and Round 11 is open! Get in quick, as applications for a voucher will close at 10am on 13 October or earlier if the budget allocation is fully exhausted.

If your family or child has a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, you may be eligible for up to $200 to put towards the cost of your child's swim lessons at Shawn's Swim School, provider number 3675489 .

Important dates

Round 11 open to apply for a voucher or reimbursement: 10am Tuesday, 15 September 2026, closing 10am on 13 October or earlier if the budget allocation is fully exhausted.
Reimbursement expenditure dates: from 1 May 2026 to submission of application.
Vouchers expiry date: Tuesday, 27 April 2027.

How to apply

Apply at www.getactive.vic.gov.au/vouchers to have your voucher emailed to you. Let us know your voucher code when you pay your fees and we will take up to $200 off your fees.

Tip: Be sure to select us as your Activity Provider. We are listed as Shawn's Swim School in Hoppers Crossing, and our Get Active Kids Voucher Program number is 3675489 .

If you have already paid for your child's activity, you can apply for a reimbursement. You can only apply for either one voucher or a reimbursement for each child in Round 11.

New Lesson Fees From 5 October 2026

We wanted to let you know about an upcoming change to our lesson fees at Shawn's Swim School.

Lesson fees from 5 October 2026

After School and Pre-School Lessons

1 child: $27
2 children: $26.50 each
3 or more children: $26 each

Squad

$26 if doing squad only
$24 if still doing lessons

Tadpoles

$184 for 8 lessons ($23 per lesson)
$27 per lesson if only doing 1 class per week ($108 for 4 lessons)

Adults

$32 per lesson

Private Lessons: $60

Why the change

Our last lesson fee increase was on 1 January 2025. Since then, we have worked hard to absorb increasing costs without passing these directly onto our families.

In 2025, the industry award increased by 3.5%, which we absorbed without increasing our lesson fees. This year, we faced a further 4.75% award increase, alongside continued increases in the everyday costs of running our swim schools.

We understand that a price increase is never welcome news, but after nearly two years at our current pricing, this adjustment is necessary to ensure we can continue investing in our team and maintaining the quality of our programs.

As always, our focus remains the same: small class sizes, quality teaching, an incredible team and providing the best possible swimming experience for every student who walks through our doors. Thank you for your continued support and for growing with us.

Kids Active Voucher Program

For those families that are eligible, the Kids Active Voucher Program should be open again some time in September, so keep your eyes open for an opening date. You may be eligible to apply for a $200 voucher towards your child's swim lessons with us. We are a registered provider. Find out how to apply here .

Term 3 2026: Prepayments, Holiday Classes and a $20 Extra Lesson Offer

Term 3 prepayment totals

Our Term 3 begins on Monday 13th of July and concludes Saturday 3rd of October .

Diving classes

We will be holding diving classes on Wednesday 1st of July between 1pm and 3pm . This is the first Wednesday of the school holidays.

The cost is $15 for the half hour class and must be paid when you book in and cannot be cancelled. No refund will be given for a cancelled class for any reason. To book in please see reception and be quick because spots fill up quickly. These classes are only for students who are having lessons in our big pool (Dolphins or above).

Private lessons

We are offering some 1 on 1 private lessons during the school holidays. These are for any current students at Shawn's Swim School in any level, from pre-schoolers up to squad swimmers. The teacher will work on any skill your child wants to improve on, whether it be a beginner who is having trouble floating or a squad swimmer who wants to improve their butterfly!

These classes will be held on Wednesday 8th July, between 12 and 3pm . They will be of 30 minutes duration. The cost will be $50, payable upon booking. To book in please see reception. Other days might be offered if these classes fill up quickly.

$20 extra lesson per week winter promotion

To encourage our swimmers to continue their progress throughout the winter months, we are offering discounted second weekly lessons for currently enrolled students.

Students can add an extra lesson each week for the discounted price of just $20 per lesson . The additional lesson must be booked into another available class time on a different day where vacancies exist. This lesson is in addition to your regular weekly class and does not replace or affect any make-up lessons associated with your normal booking, which will continue under our usual conditions and pricing.

Attending a second lesson each week can greatly assist with building water confidence, improving technique, and accelerating skill development in preparation for summer.

This special offer is available until the end of Term 3 (October 2). If you would like to take advantage of it, please speak to our reception team.

Offer available for after-school children's classes only: weekdays 4:00pm–6:30pm and Saturdays 9:00am–3:00pm. Not available for Adult Classes, Tadpole Classes, or Squad.

Welcome to Term 2 2026: ANZAC Day Closure and Colouring Competition Winners

ANZAC Day closure

A reminder that we will be closed Saturday 25th April for ANZAC Day.

As we take a day out of the pool, we pause to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who served. Enjoy the day, and take a moment to remember.

Colouring competition winners

A big thank you to everyone who entered our Speedo Easter Colouring Competition! We absolutely loved seeing all your creative designs. You brightened up our reception area with colour and imagination!

Winners were announced across our 1–3, 4–6, 7–9, 10–12 and 13+ age groups. Winners, please come to the reception desk to receive your prize. Congratulations once again!

Christmas Closure, End-of-Year Make-Ups and Bookings for 2026

Christmas closure

Shawn would like to thank all of our wonderful families for their continued support of Shawn's Swim School in 2025. We have the best families attending our swim school and we are very grateful. Shawn would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Be safe, especially around water. This Summer, please watch your children at all times and encourage them to practise all the skills they have learnt with us. We want to see you all return safely to us in 2026!

Make-up lessons to be completed by end of year

Our last lesson for the year will be held on Saturday 20th of December . We will then be closed for 6 weeks and will re-open on Monday February 2nd .

Term 3 2025: Prepayments, Intra-Squad Meet and We Have Vacancies!

Term 3 pre-payments

If you wish to pre-pay for Term 3, pre-payment fees are due from the week beginning Monday 21st of July . You will be paid up until our last lesson on Saturday 4th of October . There will be 11 weeks in Term 3 (except for those attending lessons on Fridays, who will have 10 lessons due to the Grand Final Public Holiday on Friday 26th September).

Squad meet

Shawn's Swim School will be holding an "Intra-Squad" swimming carnival at Shawn's Swim School on Saturday August 30th between 5:00pm and 7:30pm . This is available for our squad students only .

This will be a fun encouragement meet with 9 teams (Monday Senior Squad, Monday Junior Squad, Tuesday Senior Squad, Tuesday Junior Squad, Wednesday Senior Squad, Thursday Junior Squad, Thursday Senior Squad, Saturday Senior Squad and Saturday Junior Squad). Each swimmer will be representing their squad.

All events are 50 metres, and you can choose to swim in up to 4 events in your age group (just one is fine too): Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke or Butterfly.
Age is judged as your age on July 1st 2025.
The cost is $15 per swimmer. Spectators are free! There are potentially 90 swimmers on the day, so seating will be limited, if any. Bring your own chair if you wish, but viewing areas will be limited.
We are also looking for adult volunteers (mainly time keeping) to assist on the day, so if mum or dad is interested please let Shawn know.
Entry forms and payment were due no later than Wednesday 27th of August , with no late entries and swimmers capped at 90.

We have vacancies! Tell your friends!

For the first time in many years, we don't have a wait list for new students in all levels (except adults). So if you have any friends who you think might benefit from swim lessons, please tell them to enrol with us now! Don't wait for the warmer months, because we expect we will once again have a waiting list by September.

Why keep swimming through winter

As temperatures drop and winter sets in, it's tempting to pause swimming lessons. But consistent practice during the colder months is key to building and maintaining water confidence, strength and safety skills. Private lessons

We are offering some 1 on 1 private lessons during the Term 2 school holidays. These are for any current students at Shawn's Swim School in any level, from pre-schoolers up to squad swimmers. The teacher will work on any skill your child wants to improve on, whether it be a beginner who is having trouble floating or a squad swimmer who wants to improve their butterfly!

These classes will be held on Wednesday 9th of July, between 12 and 3pm . They will be of 30 minutes duration. The cost will be $50, payable upon booking. To book in please see reception. Other days might be offered if these classes fill up quickly.

Classes continue during school holidays!

Classes run as normal during the school holidays. We will only be closed for the 3 Easter Public Holidays on Good Friday April 18th, Easter Saturday April 19th and Easter Monday April 21st . Apart from those 3 days, lessons will be running as per usual. Please note there is no squad training during the school holidays.

Save the date: squad workshop on Sunday 18 May

Attention all junior and senior squad members: mark your calendars for May 18th !

Join us for an exclusive racing skills and technical session with Australian coach Jayden Brian. Jayden is head coach of MLC Aquatics, one of Victoria's most successful swimming clubs, and is on the Australian team of coaches. (He also happened to learn how to swim at Shawn's Swim School!)

On Sunday May 18th he will run a staff training session in the morning for our teachers and coaches, then 2 squad sessions:

Junior Squad: 11:30am to 1pm
Senior Squad: 1:30pm to 3pm

Jayden will be working on:

Technical drills
Racing skills: starts, turns and finishes
Mini-set: speed focus (both squads)
Mini-set: kick
Mini-set: aerobic focus (senior squad only)
Race practice

Cost per student is $30 and must be pre-paid. You can book at reception, or email us to register your interest at shawn@shawnsswimschool.com.au . Positions are limited to 25 swimmers in each session, so please book in quickly to avoid disappointment.

School swimming carnivals

We would like to wish all of our young swimmers who are representing their school in the upcoming District Swim Carnivals the very best of luck. Congratulations on making your school team!

Shawn and some of his team like to attend these carnivals to support our swimmers where possible. If your child is participating in their inter-school carnival, please email Shawn at shawn@shawnsswimschool.com.au to let him know your child's name, the school they represent and the date of their carnival.

Starlight Super Swim fundraiser

This February, a group of our staff are taking part in the Super Swim Challenge to raise funds for the Starlight Children's Foundation.

Did you know that every minute of every day a sick child is admitted to hospital in Australia? Serious childhood illness doesn't just impact a child's health. It can turn their whole life upside down, causing them to miss out on spending time with their family, building friendships, going to school and just living their life.

Australia has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, but sick children and young people need more than the exceptional care that our clinicians can offer. They need the social and emotional support that lets them be a child. Starlight uses play, social connection and creativity to support sick kids in some of their toughest times and positively change their healthcare experience.

It would mean so much to our team of staff (called The Buoys) if you'd support their challenge, because together we can make a real difference for sick kids. Donate to The Buoys here .

Speech pathology vacancies

Clinton, an educational speech-language pathologist with 15+ years' experience, has launched Taking Flight Speech, Language and Literacy! It offers mobile paediatric speech pathology services to home, school and community settings in both Western Melbourne and Inner Melbourne suburbs, plus telehealth for clients including those in regional Victoria and NSW.

Taking Flight Speech, Language and Literacy are:

Educational Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP), with clients aged between 4 and 18 years of age
Highly competent in speech sound production, oral language (receptive and expressive language), literacy (reading, spelling and writing), social skills (pragmatic language), emotional regulation and inclusive education
Medicare registered, for Medicare rebates (e.g. Chronic Disease Management plans)
Services eligible for private health rebates with extras cover (rebates vary between private health funds)
Able to support self-managed and plan-managed NDIS clients

Shawn's Christmas message

Shawn would like to thank all of our wonderful families for their continued support of Shawn's Swim School in 2024. We have the best families attending our swim school and we are very grateful.

We have celebrated our 30th year in style, winning ASSA's 2024 National Swim School of the Year , and Shawn winning Wyndham's Business Person of the Year !

Shawn would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Be safe, especially around water. This Summer, please watch your children at all times and encourage them to practise all the skills they have learnt with us. We want to see you all return safely to us in 2025!

New bathers in stock for Christmas

The new 2025 Speedo range has arrived, just in time for Christmas. Shop now at reception!

Make-up lessons to be completed by end of year

Any make-up lessons that you have incurred before December this year will not be transferred to 2025. If you don't get these make-ups done before we close, you will need to pay half for those missed lessons in order for your position to be held for 2025 (or, if you have pre-paid, we will refund half your payment for those lessons or take that amount off your Term 1 2025 fees).

Closing and opening dates

Our last lesson for the year will be on Saturday December 21st . We will then be closed for the Summer School Holidays and will re-open for Term 1 2025 on Monday February 3rd .
